Sometime around 1844 and 1885, a girl child was born, named Margaret Smith. Being slave born, we are unable to explain her sir name. Margaret was formerly an enslaved woman who belonged to Simon Harrington and Miley Howard Harrington, father of Thomas Jefferson (T.J.) Harrington (1847 – 1927). T.J. offered anyone who would build a home in the Donald village an acre of land. He owned 10,000 acres of land at one time. His father, Simon, appears in other people’s probate proceedings as an appraiser, witness and court officer. The 16th Militia District has been associated with Simon Harrington\u2019s Sage Plantation that had a stagecoach station on the property along Darien Road. As early as 1748 there was a trail from Darien, Georgia, into what became the 16th Militia District of Liberty County. It continued into the unmapped wilderness and was used by trappers, fur traders, and Creek Indians. These stations were used as locations of rest for passengers during long journeys. She joined the church at an early age. Several of our fore parents\u2019 membership were affiliated with their landlord or slave master, as they were called. Slaves who were allowed to attend church, attended Jones Creek and Ebenezer, the oldest churches in those days. Some were not allowed to attend church; therefore, they attempted to hide themselves somewhere to pray. It\u2019s been stated they would use a wooden tub or an iron pot so their landlord could not hear them pray. Whenever someone died, they were buried in the backside of the white cemetery. As years passed, our fore parents decided to organize churches of their own race and anyone desiring to sing and pray could serve the Lord as they desired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Approximately, in the 1860s, Margaret conceived George Smith, Joseph (Joe) Smith, and Margaret (Ella) Smith. On December 23, 1869, Margaret married John Allen Gault.To this union three children were born: Jannie Gault, Lizzie Gault, and Johnnie Gault. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the June 22, 1967 Ludowici News, Margaret Gault preceded the development of Donald. It was proposed that the community be named \u201cMargaretville\u201d because she was the lone resident at that time. However, due to another place in Georgia having that name, the town was named for the McDonald family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 1st generation consisted of George Smith and Lucy Fraser, the parents of 12 children, Joseph (Joe) Smith and Cassie Stevens, the parents of 8 children, Margaret (Ella) Smith and Alford Strickland, the parents of 10 children, Jannie Gault and Lee Bullock, the parents of 2 children, Lizzie Gault and George Robinson, the parents of 10 children, and Johnnie Gault was never united in marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
